The more we’re able to take personal responsibility the more agency we have.
Responsibility is synonymous with control.
Feeling in control always feels good.
Learning to take responsibility for our actions will also feel good.
Many people avoid a sense of responsibility for fear of losing control.
“If I don’t take ownership of this, then I can’t get it wrong”.
This then makes life passive. You’ll always be waiting for others to be responsible and therefore take control.
By being able and willing to own your thoughts and actions you gain more control of your life.
We don’t live in bubbles, so we will always interact with others, and they’ll often want to feel in control too. This is where we can learn to collaborate.
This way we can continue to feel in control of our lives whilst allowing others to feel in control of theirs too.
When we take responsibility for our actions and become accountable, we have to think harder about what we do. We have to learn to make better decisions and raise our awareness of how our actions have consequences.
It does take more effort to be thoughtful upfront, yet it reduces the effort it takes to put things right in retrospect. It makes us more competent humans.
