It’s our most precious resource. I don’t even think that’s an overstatement. Without time, we can’t get anything done. We can’t remedy the damage done to the planet, we can’t come up with innovations and we wouldn’t be able to take care of ourselves and loved ones.
I often find I have clients who really struggle to know how to use their time. They’re scared about wasting time, but perhaps misunderstand how to spend it. There’s an assumption that we must be “productive” to be spending time well. I would suggest we need to understand what “productive” means.
I suspect it’s not really about sitting in meetings, sitting in (being) traffic or doing things we don’t like doing. Beyond that, it’s fairly open ended. It could be spending it working on activist agendas, working on a project or in a job that you enjoy or just relaxing with friends and family.
It doesn’t matter what you do, just make sure you’re spending time, not killing it or wasting it. Do your best not to get hung up on “having enough” time, you can enjoy yourself even during brief moments. Avoid becoming overwhelmed by trying to be “productive”. Fill your time with things you like (love) doing and life will feel a life lived. Literally aim to enjoy every minute…
